That a 12 year-old was illegally targeted is just horrible. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/186473

The Bible clearly states that a sin sacrifice can only be used for accidental transgressions. It cannot be used to atone for deliberate sins. The sin sacrifice is only for some sins, not all sins. For instance, the sin sacrifice has nothing to do with deliberately stealing a car or assaulting a neighbor.

The claim that Jesus' death is a sacrifice and that sacrifice atones for all sins is simply false. Further, I would like to remind you that the Biblical sin sacrifice involved specified animals or flour conducted by the High Priest at the Holy Temple not killing of a person by Romans away from the Temple.

So, I found it pretty important and worth sharing that the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod did just that. The LCMS church put up a story on its blog stating that the whole point of Congregation Chai V'Shalom, Apple of His Eye Ministries and Burning Bush Ministries is to convert Jews. More evidence that "Messianic Judaism" is simply Christianity trying to get Jewish converts.
As with many Messianic "rabbis" (Shapira holds no real Jewish rabbinic ordination), Shapira makes numerous errors in his book. Rabbi Eli Cohen, a true rabbi, has reviewed his book and points out some of the major errors made by Shapira.
However, it has not let go of the Christian roots of the Messianic movement. According to their website (accessed 8/6/13), Membership Requirement #13 is "Applicant should be of good report within the Christian community with local Pastors willing to vouch for congregation and its Senior leader." A real Jewish organization would never require a synagogue to have Christians pastors vouch for it. This would be completely illogical. But since the Messianic movement was created by Christianity, it is a real and commonsense requirement. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-65169290391603502832013-09-08T18:06:00.001-04:002013-09-08T18:06:10.200-04:00Reading and Undetstanding Isaiah 53I feel that on a conceptual level, Isaiah 53 is one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented parts of the Bible. I often get emails from individuals in the Messianic movement claiming that Jesus (or Yeshua, as they like to call him, which is of questionable historicity...alas, I will leave that for another day) is the Servant of Isaiah 53. The Suffering Servant speech of Isaiah 53 (which really starts in Isaiah 52) is one of four Servant speeches in Isaiah. Incidentally, the other speeches are clear that Israel is the Servant.

However, I want to address a more important, broader topic. The same individuals that claim Jesus is the Servant also claim that Jesus is G-d. Now we have a huge theological problem. G-d is the Master of the Universe. There is nothing above G-d. G-d is literally the King of Everything. To claim that Jesus is both G-d and a Servant demeans G-d. This lowers G-d from Master to a mere servant. It is simply not possible for G-d to be anything but the Master. Servants serve the master and G-d serves no one. So, if Messianics want to claim that Jesus is the Servant of Isaiah 53 then they must drop the notion of Jesus being Divine or else they have insulted G-d by stating that G-d is a servant. If Messianics want to believe that Jesus is Divine then they must drop the notion of Jesus being the Servant of Isaiah 53. G-d is the One True Master and cannot ever be mistaken for a servant.
However, sometimes there are truly eye-opening articles that are published that give you an idea of what Messianic "Judaism" is really about. Let me give you a few quotes from the Baptist Press on the Southern Baptist Messianic Fellowship. The Southern Baptist Messianic Fellowship is made up of approximately 40 Messianic congregations:
This year marks the second time the Messianics
have had a booth in the SBC exhibit hall, and this year it is sponsored
by the North American Mission Board. Their presence at the booth, the
group says, is one of the most successful ways they have been able to
partner with Southern Baptist churches for strategic outreach to Jewish
people.

"We're excited about the opportunity to get together with
our brothers and sisters in the SBC and talk about our ministry and our
outreach to Jewish people," Saffle told Baptist Press. "We're excited
about what the Lord is doing, growing the number of congregations. We're
working with missionaries around the world to help reach Jewish people
for Christ."

Ric Worshill, vice president of the fellowship, said
Messianic ministers are meeting more frequently to discuss with NAMB a
process for Messianic church planting and evangelism. For instance, in
March, 16 people gathered in Indianapolis at the State Convention of
Baptists in Indiana to network and dialogue about Jewish evangelism in
the state.

"SBMF is on the move," Worshill said, noting several new church plants in the past few years.

Saffle
said that at the Orlando meeting they'll discuss some of the effective
ways they've found to reach Jews, and a representative from the
International Mission Board who currently is serving in Israel will
speak to the group."
Rabbi Stuart Federow, the author of Whatjewsbelieve.org, has turned his wonderful website into a free app for Android phones. Most Christians, including members of Messianic "Judaism", believe that Isaiah 53 discusses Jesus and use this as a primary source for their religious beliefs. However, I believe they miss a crucial point. The subject is called "My servant" by G-d in Isaiah 52:13 (the speech of Isaiah 53 begins in chapter 52) and 53:11. There are a few key points to focus on here. First, the Servant of Isaiah 53 clearly serves G-d. By definition, the Servant is subservient to G-d. A servant serves his master while G-d is the Ultimate Master of the Universe and serves no one. In standard Christian (including Messianic) belief, Jesus is both the Messiah and divine.

Here is the logical problem with asserting that Jesus is the Servant of Isaiah 53. G-d as Master of the Universe can never be called a "servant." If Jesus is truly divine, then he cannot be the Servant. It is false, and insulting, to refer to G-d (or any aspect of G-d) as a "servant." So, if Jesus is part of the Trinity, he cannot be the Servant of Isaiah 53. Then again, if you believe that Jesus is definitely the Servant of Isaiah 53, then he cannot be divine. Again, we cannot call G-d a "servant."

For those who like math, here is the problem with asserting that Jesus is the Servant of Isaiah 53, set up as a simple syllogism.

According to Christian-Messianic belief:

G-d = Jesus
and
Jesus = Servant
therefore

G-d = Servant

As the Ultimate Master of the Universe, we can logically know that the conclusion that is derived from believing that Jesus is the Servant is false. G-d is never a servant. So, Christians-Messianics must either reject the notion that Jesus is divine if they accept Isaiah 53 to be about Jesus or reject the notion that Jesus is talked about in Isaiah 53 if they believe he is divine.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-20775118674800575982012-12-02T21:40:00.002-05:002012-12-02T21:40:36.700-05:00Judaism and Christianity: A ContrastRabbi Stuart Federow of What Jews Believe (www.whatjewsbelieve.org) has a new book, "Judaism and Christianity: A Contrast." In his book, he explores the key differences between the two religions, with in depth analysis of the Biblical text.
Rabbi Federow has a great deal of expertise on both Judaism and Christianity. He is a passionate and knowledgeable teacher who takes confusing concepts and brings them clarity. I highly recommend his book!
Keep in mind the words of Ezekiel 18:19-22 in which we learn that each of us are responsible for our own sins and that personal repentance leads to forgiveness.

Yet you say: Why does not the son bear the iniquity of the father with
him? When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has
kept all My statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live.
The soul that sins, it shall die; the son shall not bear the iniquity
of the father with him, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of
the son with him; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him,
and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed, and
keep all My statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall
surely live, he shall not die.
None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered
against him; for his righteousness that he has done he shall live.

Now, Messianics will generally tell you that Jesus is G-d's firstborn son. But G-d says something quite different in the Bible. In Exodus 4:22-23, G-d orders Moses to say"And you will say to Pharaoh: Thus says the L-RD: Israel is My son, My first-born. And I have said to you: Let My son go, that he may serve Me; and you have refused to let him go. Behold, I will slay your son, you first-born.:"

So, we learn in story of Passover that the true firstborn son of G-d is not Jesus, but the Jewish people.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-70096833647554798332012-04-09T21:38:00.002-04:002012-04-09T21:43:13.680-04:00Rabbi Michael SkobacRabbi Michael Skobac of Jews for Judaism Canada has some wonderful countermissionary videos. They claim that matzah is striped because Jesus was striped and that the matzah's holes are like the holes from Jesus on the cross. However, this makes no real sense. The only matzah that has stripes are those that are machine-made. The stripes are a by-product of the machine with no real meaning. Traditional hand-made matzah has no stripes. As for the holes, they are put in so the matzah does not balloon up when being cooked. It has nothing to do with Jesus.
Further, I have seen Messianics try to tie Jesus to the middle matzah. They claim that the middle matzah is broken, part of it is hidden as the afikomen and later the two parts are put together as a whole. This is supposed to symbolize how Jesus was a sacrifice without broken bones. Ignoring for a second that humans are not Biblically-permissible as sacrifices, the middle matzah is never put back together. The part which is kept at the table is eaten with the rest of the matzah at the seder meal. The idea of putting it back together simply is a creation of the Messianic movement.
Jesus ultimately has not ties to the matzah or to the meaning of Passover.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-41237180602406277422012-03-28T21:12:00.002-04:002012-03-28T21:59:46.076-04:00Jesus in the PassoverPassover is coming up in a little over the week and Messianic congregations/organizations will be talking about how Jesus can be found in the Passover. In fact, there is quite a business for groups like Jews for Jesus to go around and present to churches on the idea of Jesus in Passover. But is Jesus really part of Passover?

One of the claims that are made is that Jesus is the Passover sacrifice. However, this claim is simply not supported by the Bible. In the original commandments of the Passover sacrifice in Exodus Chapter 12, the Jewish people are commanded to take a lamb, kill it and place it's blood around the doorpost. They are next commanded to take the flesh of the lamb, roast it and eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Any of the flesh that is left the next day is commanded to be burned. In Deuteronomy 16, G-d again commands the Jewish people to do a Passover sacrifice. Again, the Jews are commanded to eat the sacrifice. Other verses such as Exodus 34:25 state that the sacrifice cannot be left over for consumption the next day. Numbers Chapter 9: 9-12 reiterates that the Passover sacrifice is properly eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. What about Jesus? Was he killed, roasted and eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs as commanded by G-d regarding the real Passover sacrifice? Of course not. Jesus' death does not match the Biblical commandments from G-d in the Bible in any way, shape or form.

Now, many Messianics will say that Jesus was symbolically the Passover sacrifice and his blood covered everyone's sins. But G-d does not say that the sacrifice was symbolic-we are commanded to literally eat the sacrifice. These are commandments, not artistic options. In fact, in Jesus' time the true Passover sacrifice was still ongoing. Every year, people came and ate the real Passover sacrifice, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Moreover, G-d clearly states the true purpose of the annual Passover sacrifice in Exodus 12:26-27. G-d says that when children ask you about the purpose of the Passover sacrifice you are to say, "It is the sacrifice of the L-RD'S passover, for that He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when He killed the Egyptians, and delivered our houses." The Biblical purpose of the annual Passover sacrifice is to remember how G-d redeemed the Jewish people. It has nothing to do with sin.

Lastly, Deuteronomy 16:5-7 points out another way in which Jesus' death cannot be the Passover sacrifice. The Passover sacrifice is only allowed at the place where G-d puts G-d's name. In Jesus' time that was the Holy Temple. It is Biblically forbidden for the sacrifice to be done elsewhere, yet Jesus was killed by the Romans away from the Holy Temple.

In sum, the Bible proves that Jesus' death cannot be the Passover sacrifice.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-59115431699083385782012-02-14T20:52:00.002-05:002012-02-14T21:06:27.015-05:00Muslim vs. MessianicWhile reading a recent news article, I thought about how Messianics present themselves as still being part of Judaism despite the fact that Messianic "Judaism" is a branch of Christianity, created by Christianity.

So, let's compare their statements to an item in the news. Sean Stone, famous producer Oliver Stone's son, converted to Islam. He stated to the Agence France Presse: "The conversion to Islam is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, which I was born with. It means I have accepted Mohammad and other prophets."

Now, does anyone think that he has NOT abandoned Christianity or Judaism now that he has embraced Islam? Of course he has abandoned them for Islam. By that same rationale, Messianics who were born Jewish abandoned Judaism once they embraced the Christian beliefs of Messianic "Judaism."Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-55199344624807166212012-02-13T19:53:00.002-05:002012-02-13T20:07:05.674-05:00Genesis 18....and 19.....I find that many Messianics often get confused by Genesis 18. In the story, Abraham is approached by three unknown men. In Genesis 18:3, he refers to them as "Adonai", which can be translated as "lords" or "L-rd." The first translation implies that he is just using the term to honor his guests, who are angels. However, most Christians, including those in Messianic "Judaism", believe that the correct translation is "L-rd" and that this is an example of G-d coming as a man. So, which one is true? Are these angels or G-d as a man?

Well, first we have to remember that in multiple sections of the Bible, G-d states that G-d is not a man (e.g. Numbers 23:19, Hoshea 11:9, Psalm 146:3-5). Second, we just need to go to the beginning of the next chapter of Genesis for the answer. In chapter 18, one of the "men" tell Abraham that he is going to have a child, then disappears. The other two then go with Abraham to Sodom and Gemorrah. In Genesis 19:1, the remaining two men are identified as angels. In Genesis 19:2, Lot refers to the two angels as "Adonai", which is translated as "lords." Just like Abraham in chapter 18, Lot asks them to stay and offers to wash their feet. In light of Genesis 19, it is clear that the "men" of chapter 18 were angels and the proper translation of Adonai is "lords."Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-43642563503392769372012-01-19T21:00:00.002-05:002012-01-19T21:03:56.147-05:00Keeping Judaism JewishJust wanted to give a heads up about a new counter-missionary blog, Keeping Judaism Jewish: http://keepingjudaismjewish.wordpress.com/Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15879748.post-90274938726053513082011-12-27T21:22:00.004-05:002011-12-27T21:28:08.743-05:00Delayed-Just For A BitBack in September, I wrote that I will be getting back to updating my website and blog....and well, some things have come up that will lead to a bit of a longer delay for major changes. In truth, there is nothing remotely similar between Jesus' death and the actual sacrifices at the Holy Temple. Biblical law is entirely clear that Jesus' death is not a legal form of sin sacrifice. For a sin sacrifice, the only allowable items were cows, sheep, goats, a few types of birds and flour. Yes, the Bible allows flour as a sacrifice for the poor-the entire idea that a "blood sacrifice" was necessary is simply un-Biblical. Humans were not on the list of sacrifices. The sin sacrifice ceremony was done by the Kohanim, the priests, and the Bible prescribes the details of the ritual with specific laws. The sacrifice was done at the Holy Temple, or prior to the Holy Temple being built, at the Tabernacle. The sacrifice was for past sins. All of the above are the mandatory laws of Biblical sin sacrifice.

Now, let's look at Jesus. He was a man who was killed by the Romans on a cross away from the Holy Temple. If we compare his death to a sacrifice, there are many Biblical legal problems. The sacrificial item is Biblically illegal. The ceremony was incorrect and done by the wrong people at the wrong place. Moreover, Messianics claim that his death removes sin that occurred roughly 2000 years after his death. Biblical law prescribes that sacrifice removes past sins, not future sins.

When I point this out to Messianics, I have gotten the response that I am being too "legalistic." But do you think G-d gave these laws for no good reason? Do you think that G-d gave them to be ignored? I, and the rest of true Judaism, believe that G-d gave laws because G-d wanted them followed.

Let me finish with a comparison. Let us compare the legality of Jesus' death as "sacrifice" to legal driving. To be as off on legal driving as Jesus' death is to a real sacrifice, you would have to have an underaged child driving a non-street legal vehicle backwards down a sidewalk. In the driving analogy, there is clearly the wrong person driving the wrong vehicle, using the wrong method of driving and in the wrong location. All of these were also wrong with Jesus. With Jesus' death we see the wrong sacrificial item (Jesus), wrong people offering sacrifice (Romans), wrong method (cross) and at the wrong place (away from the Temple). Plus, the idea that a sacrifice can be applied to sins centuries after the "sacrifice" was made is Biblically wrong.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
